Anthropologists and sociologists have long recognised that the family unit represents the most basic universal building block on which society is built. In the 21st century, many types of families coexist: a nuclear family, a one-parent family, a family headed by a same-sex couple, a single generational or multi-generation extended family. But whichever the type of family, we all recognise a family when we see one and clearly, one of the most basic roles of a family unit is the nurture of children.
The United Nations founded the International Day of Families in 1994, dedicating the 15th of May to celebrate the importance of families, as well as people, societies and cultures around the world. Our contribution to International Family Day activities, is to share some of the milestones in the development of our own corporate family, to give way to some stories about families around the world that IVIRMA helped to create. We feel pleased and honoured that these families will always have a place in the heart of our family.
Where life begins: the birth of IVIRMA
IVI in the UK and Europe
IVI first saw the light of day in Spain in 1990. It was founded by two professors, José Remohí and Antonio Pellicer, who lead the group and turned it into a leader in fertility treatment, expanding across Europe and Latin America. Later on, our family group extended its partnership with leading fertility experts in the UK, which in turn led to the creation of our flagship fertility clinic in London’s prestigious Wimpole Street.
RMA in the USA
In the meantime, across the Atlantic, RMA was established in 1999 by three doctors, Paul Bergh, Richard Scott and Michael Drews. Its consistently above-average results and dedication to state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge research soon gained recognition and it became a leader in the Americas.
The perfect match
In 2017 the two companies merged to become IVIRMA. You could say this was a marriage made in heaven and like all good marriages, it was based on shared values and a shared vision. Both parties equally embrace the importance of innovation, research and high-quality scientific results, and it was this common culture that made a focused approach possible: the single objective of achieving the best results for our patients. Now, as one only global company covering the UK, Europe, the United States and Latin America, we have more than 65 clinics in 11 countries around the world.
Bringing up the next generation
Our extended family network is not just about advances in research and delivering over 67,000 assisted reproduction treatments; we’re great believers in nurturing next generations. Our global education network provides Master’s degrees and a wide range of specialist courses and training programs, with the goal to bring on a new generation of fertility practitioners who share our passion for reproductive medicine along with the best standard of care and outstanding results that can transform people’s lives.
International family day activities
The UN promotes its message with activities to spread the word: media coverage includes TV and radio programmes, organised workshops, conferences and cultural programmes. On a more personal level, there are lots of activities that you can share with your family to make this day special. You could bake a cake at home and decorate it with a scheme designed by the children, give them the gift of your time and attention with a simple board game, or get out into the garden and encourage them to plant seeds in their own special
And what about IVIRMA family group? For us, one of our favourite family-focused activities is looking back at some of our successful stories that reflect the love and joy that lies at the heart of family life. Today we would like to take this opportunity and share some of them with you.
“Being a father is everything to me … it’s the best feeling ever”
“Not just a doctor’s office, it’s a community of people who are there to make your dreams come true”
“He is probably the best thing that ever happened to me”
These individual stories are just a very small sample of the thousands of families who contact IVIRMA to express and share their happiness with us. Each one has their own personal story and despite all them being different somehow, the common denominator of these stories is that dreams can come true.
What’s your celebration going to be?
If you already have children, we wish you a creative and joyful International Family Day. If you’ve yet to start or complete your family, hold on to the messages of our successful stories and do not give up on your dreams.
We know taking the first step is not always easy. Meeting up our London flagship in an informal and relaxed environment might be a good start. Why don’t you come to one of our open evenings? You can make the most of this opportunity to meet an approachable team of experts, chat, learn and take a guided tour of our facilities. Everyone will be there – nurses, doctors and embryologists – so you can get to know the people who will be by your side on your fertility journey. We look forward to help you to start your family.
Happy International Family Day!
